Lycian Coast Highlights: 7 Stops You Shouldn’t Miss.

Located near Ölüdeniz, Butterfly Valley is one of the most famous natural wonders around Fethiye. The valley is surrounded by steep cliffs and opens onto a beautiful beach with turquoise water. Because the valley is difficult to reach by land, boat access is the classic and most scenic way to arrive.

Butterfly Valley is known for its protected nature and its butterfly species. It is often described as home to more than 80 species of butterflies, and its dramatic canyon landscape gives the stop a wild and untouched feeling. Travellers can swim in the sea, relax on the beach or take a short hike into the valley.

On some Blue Cruise programs, Butterfly Valley can be explored for several hours. Zodiac boats may be used to access narrower or more difficult areas depending on sea conditions and tour type. Walking deeper into the valley reveals a quieter natural side away from the main beach area.

Tersane Bay is one of the most important places in this region because it combines clear water, historical atmosphere and one of the best swimming experiences near the ruins. Some tours also include overnight stays around this area, giving travellers time to feel the calm of Kekova after the day boats leave.

Kekova is especially powerful because it combines archaeology and sea travel in the same moment. You do not simply visit ruins; you pass through them by boat, seeing how history and coastline overlap.

Simena, also known as Kaleköy, is one of Kekova’s most iconic stops. It is a small village built around ancient ruins and topped by Simena Castle, which offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views over Kekova.

One of the reasons Kaleköy feels so special is that there is no regular land access to the village. It can only be reached by boat. This gives Simena a secluded and exclusive atmosphere, especially compared with more developed coastal towns.

While in Kaleköy, visitors can walk up to Simena Castle, see Lycian sarcophagi, explore narrow village paths and meet local people around the harbour. The handmade ice cream sold in the village is a small but famous part of the experience for many Blue Cruise travellers.

Inside Simena Castle is a tiny ancient stone theatre, considered one of the smallest theatres in Turkey. Its setting is unforgettable: a small archaeological structure with an open view across Kekova’s blue water, islands and anchored boats.

Demre is one of the most important historical stops on the route. It is known as the place where Saint Nicholas, the historical figure behind Santa Claus, lived and served as bishop. For many travellers, the Church of St. Nicholas is one of the main cultural reasons to visit Demre.

Demre is also home to the ancient city of Myra, one of the most impressive Lycian sites in the region. Myra’s rock-cut tombs rise dramatically above the ancient theatre, creating one of the most photographed archaeological scenes on the Lycian Coast.

The Lycian rock tombs and Roman-era theatre are a must-see for history lovers. Myra was one of the largest cities of ancient Lycia and archaeological work continues to reveal more about the city’s past.

Demre also hosts the Lycian Civilizations Museum, located around the Kumdağı area near Andriake. The museum contains important artefacts from the Lycian period and is especially valuable for inscriptions, sculptures and regional archaeological finds.

Suluada, near Adrasan, has become one of the most popular coastal stops in recent years. Often called the “Maldives of Turkey,” it is famous for crystal-clear water, white sandy beaches and a bright, tropical-looking coastline.

The island’s water is rich in minerals and has traditionally been believed by locals to have healing properties, especially for skin conditions. Whether or not you visit for this reason, the clarity and colour of the water make Suluada a memorable swim stop.

Marine life around the island is diverse, which makes it a good place for snorkeling. The calm and current-free waters around some parts of Suluada can also make it suitable for beginner divers when conditions and tour arrangements allow.

Because Suluada has become very popular, timing matters. Visiting earlier in the day or outside the busiest peak-summer hours can create a calmer experience.
